The Scaffolding goes up

The builders are getting on in leaps and bounds.  Yesterday they put up the scaffolding in the front of the house in preparation for having the roof off, insulating it and putting it back.  We are just hoping for some dry weather for them to do this.

They have finished building the blocks for the kitchen extension now and have to wait until the roof has been completed on the house before they can put on the roof of the extension.

We can still have B&B guests whilst the work is going on, as long as they are not put off by the scaffolding.  There are a couple of poles right outside the guest room window, but hopefully the scaffolding will not be up for too long. They have had to drop the window on the first floor, so you can see where the top part is blocked up and they will have to open up the bottom part so the window is in line with the others on the first floor.

Progress on the building front October 2014

Our builders are making great progress on the renovation and building works.  Once all the foundations and underpinning were done, they laid a concrete floor and then were able to put up the rafters for the first floor of the pump room.

The following week they put up the rafters for the 2nd floor.

You could then see what the view will be from the 2nd floor bedroom window.

This week they broke through the ground floor window. The walls were pretty thick so this was quite a job.  The window has to be quite shallow as the bottom will be level with the raised ground in the front garden, hence you can see the plants through the opening which will need to be dug up.

The men have also been rendering the inside walls of the pump room with lime cement render (which breathes), getting ready for the eventual plaster on the walls.  The next job is to “tank” the floor with a waterproof membrane so no water can seep through.

Outside they have piled up the building blocks for construction of the new kitchen extension.  Can’t wait to see this go up.

We just have to pray for some dry weather to let the men get on with the outside work, as it has been horrendous with rain this week, so they have been concentrating on the inside jobs in the pump room.

Turning the garden into a builder’s yard

Our builders have been hard at work, and the back garden is rapidly turning into a builder’s yards.  We have piles of wall blocks, insulation, scalpings, cement, and sand, along with scaffold planks and pipes.

They have had to dig up the back lawn to lay drainage pipes and there are piles of earth everywhere.

However they are making progress on building the kitchen.  This was yesterday:

And by the end of  today they were 3 blocks high.

All the spoil from digging out for the foundations has been taken down to the woods and made into a road so now we have decent access to the woods.

I would recommend these builders. There are 3 or 4 of them here everyday and they really get on with the job.  It’s great to see the difference every day and know that I am one step closer to my dream kitchen.
