Sunny spring walk at Otterhead Lakes

Today was a glorious Spring day with blue skies and brilliant sunshine.  We decided a walk at Otterhead Lakes was in order. The scenery is always beautiful. We walked down to the first lake and a pair of swans were gracefully gliding over the water.

There was plenty of water rippling down the steps creating a waterfall.

We carried on following the water’s path to the little bridge where we posed.

And then further along the path to the second lake.

On our return the swans had come up closer.

Neil’s sister Carole was with us.

After our most enjoyable walk we made our way to the Candlelight pub for a quick pre lunchtime drink.  The pub was busy with lunchtime diners and there was a great atmosphere.

Inter-village tug-of-war

Yesterday was the now annual inter-village tug-of-war between Otterford (which encompasses Bishopswood) and Buckland St Mary.  It was a glorious sunny day so we were lucky in that department.

DSC05611

Unfortunately there was also cricket going on in Buckland so some people didn’t turn out for the tug-of-war and the Buckland team were a bit short on the ground.  Neil went along and eventually they just evened the teams up with the men who turned out to make it fairer.

DSC05612

Neil was sensible enough to wear gloves so he had could contact with the rope.  The position they had chosen to do the tug-of-war was on a slight hill and what kept happening was that the team pulling down hill always won.  So in the end they called in a draw!!

Then we sat on the grass in the sunshine having a BBQ and drinking home made elderflower cordial,  lovely!!

Favourite walk up Staple Hill

On Sunday, being a reasonably pleasant day we took ourselves up to Staple Hill for our favourite walk.  The trees always provide a great subject for photos.

DSC05400

There was one tree that had grown higher than the others and slightly to one side.

DSC05401

We could also see all the new growth on the pine trees; the ends all being lighter in colour than the previous growth.

DSC05402

On one side of the loop walk you get fabulous views right over to Wales.  The land is managed by Neroche and here is a sign they put up acclaiming the woods are for everyone.

DSC05406

As we rounded the corner we saw some people had built a structure like a dome shelter out of saplings.

DSC05409

Inside were some mysterious hangings, one like a butterfly and one like a dreamcatcher.

DSC05410DSC05411

We wondered who had built it and why but there was no sign and no one to ask.  I rather liked the fact that someone had been creative in the woods.

Snowdrops at Otterford Lakes

As it was such a lovely sunny day today, when our B&B guests had gone and we had the first lot of washing on, we went for a walk to Otterford Lakes.  It’s not far from us, just up through Bishopswood a couple of miles.  We walked down to the first lake and the swans were just gliding over the still water.

DSC05347

As we stood and watched them they came nearer to us and I was able to take this close up.

DSC05348

We took the lower path past the waterfall.

DSC05351

As we walked along the stream the sunlight was glinting on the water.

DSC05353

We followed the path along the stream until we came to the second lake.

DSC05356

As we walked back we were able to the see the snowdrops much better.  There were carpets of them in the woods.

DSC05361

They looked so lovely in the sunshine, really made us feel like Spring is on its way.

DSC05362

When we got home I noticed some of our Spring bulbs are bursting into life.  The crocus in the half moon baskets by the front door have come out.

DSC05365

And the very first of the Tete a Tete daffs is out.

DSC05369

We actually sat outside to have a cuppa after lunch the sun was so glorious.  I think the B&B guests who left today were jolly lucky to have this lovely sunshine and to see the view from Lodge House so clearly, even in February.

January walk up Staple Hill

Today the sun was shining and as most of the snow has cleared we took ourselves up to Staple Hill for our favourite walk.  It is about 900 feet high at Staple Hill and some of the snow was still lying in the hedgerows and on the paths.

DSC05325

There was quite a chill in the air.  I think you call it bracing!!  As we rounded the corner we saw more lying snow.

DSC05330

As we walked up the hill we saw that 2 trees had fallen right over the path, probably weighted down by the snow and then the winds we have had.

DSC05331

One of the trees you could easily walk right under as I did.

DSC05332

On the upper level the sun was peaking through the trees.

DSC05326

Freshly invigorated after our walk, we made our way home via The Candlelight Inn in Bishopswood, where we stopped for a quick lunchtime bevy!!  And the best bit was that as we had the car we didn’t have to walk up the hill back home.

Winter walk up Staple Hill

Today the sky is clear blue and the sun is shining even tho’ it is only 1 degree C – a real change from yesterday when it teamed with rain all day.

Being such a beautiful day we took ourselves up to Staple Hill for a brisk walk to take in some cold but fresh air.

DSC05105

This view is taken as you start the walk from the car park.  You then reach a kissing gate.

DSC05116

Through here takes you onto the loop walk which is popular with dog walkers, runners and walkers alike.  It’s a short walk but takes in wonderful views.  On a clear day you can see over to Wales.

DSC05115

Today was a bit hazy but still a lovely view.

We met a man walking a lovely Newfoundland dog.  It was big, he said 9 stone, but quite gentle and friendly.

DSC05113

The sun was shining through the dense pine woods.

DSC05110

When we left Staple Hill, rosy cheeked and invigorated we made our way to our local pub, the Candlelight in Bishopswood, and called in for a quick drink.  Neil had a pint and I had a Winter Pimms, lovely…

We are only 6/10ths of a mile from the pub, although it is an uphill walk home.

Lovely walk up Staple Hill

Yesterday was a glorious sunny Autumn day, clear and crisp, but also bright.  We went for a walk up one of my favourite places called Staple Hill. There is a thick pine forest wood, with such densely spaced trees that there is only a little light that can be seen through them.

There was still a frost about and I got a picture of these leaves on the grass still with their white frosty covering.

We bumped into some friends as we were walking along the path.  They  had their dogs with them and we stopped for a chat as the dogs chased each other.

When we got through the woods we were delighted with the view, it was so clear you could see right over to the estuary and then to Wales.

Neil’s sister was with us and took a photo of us two:

It was a glorious day to go for a walk and just breathe in the fresh clean cold air.
