Inter-village tug-of-war

Yesterday was the now annual inter-village tug-of-war between Otterford (which encompasses Bishopswood) and Buckland St Mary.  It was a glorious sunny day so we were lucky in that department.

Unfortunately there was also cricket going on in Buckland so some people didn’t turn out for the tug-of-war and the Buckland team were a bit short on the ground.  Neil went along and eventually they just evened the teams up with the men who turned out to make it fairer.

Neil was sensible enough to wear gloves so he had could contact with the rope.  The position they had chosen to do the tug-of-war was on a slight hill and what kept happening was that the team pulling down hill always won.  So in the end they called in a draw!!

Then we sat on the grass in the sunshine having a BBQ and drinking home made elderflower cordial,  lovely!!

St George’s Day

We English don’t make too much fuss on St George’s Day, the 23rd April.  But we at Lodge House did raise the St George’s flag today.  It was a glorious sunny day with beautiful blue sky, so the flag looks good wafting in the gentle breeze.

Happy St George’s Day everyone!!

Mad British Spring weather

We have just sat outside to have lunch in glorious sunshine.  The sky is bright blue and there is hardly a cloud in it.  Yesterday afternoon it was snowing quite hard.  What a contrast.

This morning when I let the hens out it was minus 3 degrees.  Now it is 7 degrees, that’s 10 degrees difference just in a few hours.

The Spring bulbs are responding to the sunshine.  This is one of our half moon baskets by the front door. Even the Hyacinth is popping its head up now.

The Daffs are all out.

And the little Tete a Tete daffs make a fine display in one of our pots.

I’d love this weather to continue but they have forecast rain for tomorrow, so better make the most of it today and go and clean the chickens out!!

Snowdrops at Otterford Lakes

As it was such a lovely sunny day today, when our B&B guests had gone and we had the first lot of washing on, we went for a walk to Otterford Lakes.  It’s not far from us, just up through Bishopswood a couple of miles.  We walked down to the first lake and the swans were just gliding over the still water.

As we stood and watched them they came nearer to us and I was able to take this close up.

We took the lower path past the waterfall.

As we walked along the stream the sunlight was glinting on the water.

We followed the path along the stream until we came to the second lake.

As we walked back we were able to the see the snowdrops much better.  There were carpets of them in the woods.

They looked so lovely in the sunshine, really made us feel like Spring is on its way.

When we got home I noticed some of our Spring bulbs are bursting into life.  The crocus in the half moon baskets by the front door have come out.

And the very first of the Tete a Tete daffs is out.

We actually sat outside to have a cuppa after lunch the sun was so glorious.  I think the B&B guests who left today were jolly lucky to have this lovely sunshine and to see the view from Lodge House so clearly, even in February.

Didn’t we have a glorious time the day we went to Weston!

Today was the annual coach outing for the “Golden Age Club” of which I am a helper.  We all went to Weston super Mare.  We left in the drizzle and wondered what the day would hold for us, but it turned out beautiful, we couldn’t have wished for better sunshine.

The sands of Weston Super Mare

Arriving in Weston the sea was out and all we could see was the vast expanse of flat sand.  We had coffee in a little cafe along the seafront, then walked up to and along the new resurrected pier which was only finished in 2010.  The end of the pier is a big amusement park, with lots of machines and dodgem cars, which we didn’t try our hands at.

We had fish and chips along the seafront in the sunshine.  Fish and Chips, tea and bread and butter for £5.25, very reasonable, and delicious fresh fish.

Jackie and I looking a bit blown on the pier

As the weather was so nice, we seemed to spend a lot of time just sitting in the sunshine and nattering, I’ve caught up on all the gossip now!!
